Background

Emirates Nature – WWF is a UAE environmental non-governmental organization, established under the patronage of HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler’s representative in the Western Region and Chairman of Environmental Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD). Emirates Nature-WWF works in association with WWF, one of the world’s largest and most respected independent conservation organizations. Emirates Nature-WWF has been active in the UAE since 2001 and has successfully developed and implemented several conservation and education projects and initiatives in the region. Emirates Nature-WWF works federally and in the region with offices in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Fujairah and is governed by a local board of directors.

In 2017, the new Emirates Nature-WWF Education Programme Strategy (Connect with Nature) was approved by the Board.  This strategy is now being implemented with Co-Founding partner, EAD, and Strategic Partner, the International Fund for Houbara Conservation, between 2018 and 2020, with a view to grow and extend beyond.

Job Description Overview

The Programme Manager - Conservation Education and Outreach is responsible for the further development, ongoing implementation, continued improvement and management of the Education Programme (Connect with Nature) in alignment with Emirates Nature-WWF Project Governance Standards and WWF Standards of Conservation Project and Programme Management. The role is expected to provide strong leadership to promote best practice in managing projects and programmes to ensure successful delivery.

The Programme Manager - Conservation Education and Outreach is focused on developing Connect with Nature into a fully functional Education Programme that meets sponsor and stakeholder commitments, achieves its objectives with the target audience, and is financially sustainable. This includes taking the Education Strategy approved by the Board and turning it into a series of detailed action plans and budgets and ensuring appropriate resources are in place to deliver the project on time and on budget. It also involves creating a sustainable funding model to ensure the continuation of the programme beyond 2020.

In order to support successful delivery of the programme, the Programme Manager - Conservation Education and Outreach is also required to build and develop a team of professionals who will effectively implement the projects and activities that comprise the Education Programme. This role will also ensure project resources have the correct tools and processes in place and that all relevant staff are trained and equipped to deliver successfully. Strong project/programme management and excellent organisational skills are fundamental, as is the ability to liaise with people at all levels of the organisation.

Key focus areas of responsibility

  1. Programme Management
    • Further development and ongoing management of the Education Programme through implementing best practice programme management and continual improvement, aligned with EN-WWF Project Governance Standards and WWF Standards of Conservation Project and Programme Management.
    • Ensure the Education Programme is delivered on time and on budget and meets agreed KPIs and objectives.
    • Work with internal stakeholders to design and implement an appropriate framework for monitoring, evaluation, learning and reporting, and ensure programme outcomes are shared in an open and transparent manner with relevant stakeholders.
    • Collate information on project performance for the preparation and production of project reports for internal and external management purposes.
    • Ensure detailed implementation or actions plans are created for the duration of each project as appropriate.
  2. Digital Platform
    • Work with the Digital Marketing Manager and Digital Product Manager to manage any external providers engaged to develop and manage delivery of the digital platform so that key digital offerings (e.g. gamification, online rewards and incentives, outreach, learning and engagement) are effectively reaching the target audience and supporting programme objectives.
    • Develop the project scope and objectives, involving all relevant stakeholders and ensuring technical feasibility.
  3. Risk, Liability and Compliance - Ensure key risks are identified and managed through appropriate risk management frameworks and approaches, including in relation to partnership agreements, vendor MOUs, HSE/volunteer requirements and service provider/consultant contracts.
  4. Partnerships and Stakeholder Management - Support the Associate Director to manage and oversee relationships with key partners, including funders, supporters, sponsors and stakeholders (as appropriate). Work collaboratively with Business Development to identify and steward prospective future supporters.
  5. Team Development - Build and develop a high performing team of capable professionals, including mentoring and coaching team members in best practice programme management. Work with team members to set SMART objectives and goals, conduct performance reviews and support the career development of individuals.
  6. Sustainable Financing - Support the Associate Director to create a sustainable funding model for the Education Programme to ensure its continuation and further development beyond 2020. Engage prospective supporters in co-designing their involvement and secure formal commitments through funding agreements and other mechanisms.
  7. Global Roll Out - Support the Associate Director to create and articulate a value proposition for Connect with Nature to the WWF Global network. Package the framework and key elements of the programme to support its potential roll-out and/or sale to other WWF offices globally.
1. Define, Develop and Implement the Education Programme
Technical
  • Further define and design the Connect with Nature programme and transform this into a cost effective workplan(s) with appropriate timelines and budgets across the 3 years.
  • Own and be fully accountable for workplan(s).
  • Contribute to the management, operation and performance of the Connect with Nature programme, assisting the Associate Director to ensure it meets its targets and supports the delivery of organisational and strategic goals.
  • Contribute to organisational and budget planning process for Connect with Nature, including identifying opportunities for improvements.
  • Ensure risks, issues and dependencies are recorded, monitored and proactively managed to minimise disruption to successful delivery.
  • Oversee the effective implementation of the Programme workplan(s).
  • Ensure the Programme is delivered on time and on budget and meets agreed impact KPIs including acquiring and maintaining a member base. Review Programme progress regularly with managers and evolve and adapt where necessary.
  • Oversee the development and implementation (by the team) of all project action plans
  • Ensure project plans are developed and implemented cohesively for overall Programme success (at the required quality level, on budget, to the required legalities and H&S, and delivered on time).
  • Ensure these fit seamlessly together, including in alignment with the Digital stream and ensure that all strategies and plans together deliver agreed Programme objectives and KPIs.
  • Act as the day to day link with the Digital Marketing Manager and the Digital Product Manager to create a seamless digitised Education offering, ensuring that outreach, learning and other education workstreams, activities and offerings are, where appropriate, successfully delivered through the digital ecosystem. And vice versa, ensure that key digital offerings (e.g. gamification, online rewards and incentives etc) are also delivered through the Education Programme workstreams.
  • Lead relevant team members (and the Digital Manager) to develop and continually update research on market fit, education products/offerings and target audience to support a) the development/validation of the Education products offerings, memberships and other internal components and b) supports the development of the right acquisition channels and tactics.
  • Incorporate a test, learn and adapt mindset to all Education offerings development.
  • Develop a holistic Education calendar that is aligned with the organization priorities and partner priorities e.g. outreach and research and learning products are launched to support specific conservation project goals, content calendar is in alignment with communication campaigns and key messages
  • Oversee the development of the connect with nature content calendar by working with key team members and building off of the Education calendar
  • Work with M&E manager to effectively and regularly monitor and report on progress and achievements on a regular basis to key stakeholders that are under their account management.
  • Ensure monitoring of progress against all projects is timely and accurate and enables sponsors and stakeholders to have visibility and sufficient information to make the required decisions.
  • Use reporting and other insights to continually look for ways to improve the Programme, operations and technical delivery through efficiencies, economies of scale, opportunities, improvements and other learnings (test-learn-adapt mindset).
  • Manage all legal aspects pertaining to the implementation of the programme e.g. partner contracts, HSE/volunteer requirements and supporting the team with vendor contracts.
  • Support the Associate Director to create a sustainable funding model for the Education Programme. By October 2019, implement a strategy to ensure the Education Programme is sustainably funded beyond the 3 years.
  • Support the Associate Director to alleviate risks to the Programme.
  • Support the Associate Director with the creation of the value proposition for CwN and repackage elements of the programme to enable a new volunteer channel for CwN target audience that is in alignment with the organization’s wider volunteer programme.
  • Manage and oversee key programme partners/stakeholders and relevant committees as defined by Associate Director.
  • Keep abreast with international best practices and regional activities to ensure that the Education solutions and impacts that the Programme offers are always forward thinking and relevant to the global and local context.
  • Support the Associate Director to develop and implement SOPs for the Education programme and ensure all team members adhere to these.
  • Participate in International Education committees, meetings and workstreams.
  • Support key Education team members with the development of the global roll out strategy and lead on aspects of implementation, as directed
Leadership
  • Effectively lead and manage Programme team members to successfully implement the Programme and create/maintain an engaged member base in a timely and effective manner.
  • Effectively lead and manage Programme team members to successfully drive programme evolution and growth, matching audience/member needs with Programme offerings in the medium and long term.
  • Ensure an external facing and audience/member centric mindset is created and delivered across the whole Programme.
  • In oneself and across the team, demonstrate and promote solutions oriented, smart and effective working which is focussed on outcomes and impact. Measure and monitor performance based on outcomes and impact.
  • Set SMART objectives and goals for team members and conduct performance reviews, determining development plans for performance improvements.
  • Represent Connect with Nature at a senior level in meetings and events, act as a key spokesperson and ambassador for the Programme internally and externally.
Financial
  • Undertake the compilation of the Annual workplan budget(s)
  • Effectively manage and balance the workplan budget(s) and adhere to the Financial guidelines and DOA guidelines.
Compliance
  • Ensure that the Programme complies with Emirates Nature-WWF Project Governance Standards and budgetary procedures set by the Operations team
  • Ensure that project is delivered in line with Emirates Nature-WWF values
Development
  • Oversee / manage internal training and capacity building of both new and existing team members.
  • Work with relevant team members to ensure that guides, training and processes are up to date and conducted regularly, including onboarding.
Administration
  • Any additional tasks as required by workload or as requested by the Associate Director, Conservation Education and Outreach

Required qualifications and experience

  • 10+ years operations and project management experience in the Middle East, in the NGO and/or corporate sector (including budget management and reporting)
  • Demonstrated experience in developing, implementing and evaluating strategic plans and action plans
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically and creatively, generating innovative ways to drive performance and impact
  • Experience in senior level relationship management with corporate, government and NGO partners
  • Proven knowledge and or experience in the non profit sector, preferably of environmental non-government organisations.
  • Extensive knowledge of project management and PPMS as well as EWS-WWF’s internal policies
  • Experience in leading people and teams ensuring delivery of impactful and high-quality outcomes
  • Fluent in English (essential); language skills in Arabic would be an important asset
