The world’s 7.6 billion people currently consume 1.7 times more than the earth can replace in a given year. Producing and transporting this food comes at a great cost to our wildlife, water supply and climate as the primary driver of biodiversity loss is conversion of natural habitat for food production.
With the world population estimated to reach 9.8 billion by 2050, we would need 70% more food – more than another planet’s worth – to sustain the human race.

Our goal is to test and create innovative solutions of food production and consumption in support of the National Food Security Strategy.
The food-water-climate nexus will play an increasing role in the global transition towards more sustainable patterns of food production and will be critical for the UAE in its journey to achieve food security and limit related GHG emissions. Currently, the UAE is undertaking significant investment in technology and climate-smart agriculture, and optimising food supply chains to increase both food sovereignty and food security. Emirates Nature-WWF is working closely with communities, industry and corporate partners to improve management of precious freshwater resources and soil to promote more sustainable farming practices. We are also working closely with partners and volunteers to promote sustainable diets and healthier choices through awareness campaigns and culturally appropriate policy interventions.
More than 80% of food in the UAE is imported from other regions, leading to a high environmental footprint. As our population continues to grow, a sustainable approach to food is critical to achieving food security.
We support the UAE in strategy implementation by reducing food loss and waste by 50% by 2030 and by creating solutions around food production and agricultural use of water. By raising awareness of the impact of diets on nature and our climate, we hope to deliver positive benefits for biodiversity and people.
