Background

Emirates Nature-WWF (ENWWF) is a UAE environmental non-governmental organization, established under the patronage of HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler’s representative in the Western Region and Chairman of Environmental Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD).

Emirates Nature works in association with WWF, one of the world’s largest and most respected independent conservation organizations. EN-WWF has been active in the UAE since 2001 and has successfully initiated and implemented several conservation and education projects and initiatives in the region.

EN-WWF works federally and in the region with offices in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Fujairah and is governed by a local board of directors.

Job Summary

Working under the supervision of the Conservation and Climate Change Director, the Policy and Green Economy Senior Specialist will play a key role in ENWWF’s conservation unit by supporting policy related outcomes and mainstreaming green economy priorities in the conservation portfolio. The Senior Specialist is expected to keep abreast with policy and best practice advancements, develop/maintain information and work closely with units to ensure ENWWF work is up to date with local and global policy needs and post-covid green economic recovery plans. The position is expected to perform as a supporting function for the priority conservation projects and overall strategy, as well as lead in identifying new opportunities and lay the enabling conditions for implementation of new initiatives (securing partnerships and funding). The responsibilities of the position will maintain a degree of flexibility to address organizational priorities and needs. The Senior Specialist is expected to support fundraising and communication activities related to reaching strategic organizational outcomes and offer input for a successful integration of the new membership programme with conservation impact.

Key Responsibilities

1. Enhance policy impact and green economy portfolio within the ENWWF’s Post-2020 conservation agenda

  • Collect and maintain up to date information on key policy decision making processes and opportunities at an Emirate and Federal level
  • Maintain knowledge of the UAE’s progress on topics such as green economy, circular economy, climate change and biodiversity conservation
  • Map and analyze existing international and national approaches for sustainable post-covid recovery, and identify links with ENWWF strategy, current and pipeline projects
  • Develop a conservation unit policy narrative integrating policy achievements and objectives from individual projects as well as overarching policy engagement
  • Identify key priorities for ENWWF on green/sustainable economy in support of the UAE agenda and in line with global best practice; develop concept notes, proposals and identify key partnerships and funding models
  • Identify key priorities, lead fundraising and partnership development to support current and future project implementation with a focus on green economy, circular economy and sustainable blue economy.
  • Participate in WWF International discussions on market transformation, plastics and circular economy, and sustainable finance.
  • Provide sound advice to the Director, Conservation and Climate Change and ENWWF Management Team, when required.

2. Contribute to active participation of ENWWF in local, regional and global dialogues and targeted policy discussions with key stakeholders

  • Identify and, in coordination with other conservation team members, contribute to key policy processes and opportunities to promote results and the agenda of EN-WWF in the relevant fields.
  • Engage with relevant global policy discussions, translate key messages in local context and engage with local stakeholders to influence UAE's participation and agenda.
  • Create a global policy calendar of events and help create a policy engagement strategy for the UAE in line with WWF’s roll out plans
  • Review WWF global policy positions on key environmental and sustainability issues, advise on local context
  • Develop key messaging and briefing documents to ensure a coherent participation of ENWWF in various fora and discussions
  • Liaise with internal as well as external experts (government and industry) to keep up to date with latest developments and opportunities
  • Create a global policy calendar of events and help create a policy engagement strategy for the UAE in line with WWF’s roll out plans
  • Assist in engagement with local policy decision-makers and provide technical input supporting ENWWF’s participation in the UAE’s policies, plans and strategies
  • Prepare and/or oversee the development of policy & technical briefs as well as key messaging and participate in relevant meetings/events

3. Support policy outcomes of conservation projects and cross-unit coordination on relevant topics

  • Conduct policy and green economy background research relevant to ENWWF conservation strategic priorities and projects; ensure that projects integrate up to date policy advancements
  • Support ENWWF project evaluation and strategy review through the lenses of policy and green economy impact
  • Support conservation unit and project teams in strengthening project specific policy impact and related deliverables; review technical reports; attend meetings as/when required
  • Provide technical advice on all processes, including projects managed or participated by ENWWF related to green economy/circular economy, fighting plastic pollution, climate change, and Nature Based solutions in UAE and beyond.
  • Work closely with the conservation project teams to design a stakeholder engagement plan, develop and rollout dissemination of conservation findings to key policy decision makers, provide input in policy briefs and related reports
  • Liaise with the communication team to develop key messaging and provide technical input on communication campaigns and initiatives
  • Provide technical input and work collaboratively across units to support the new membership model for ENWWF that includes successful design and delivery of technical trainings and volunteering opportunities.

Required qualifications

Experience

  • Minimum of 8 years of relevant professional experience in the fields of green economy/circular economy and environmental policy
  • Strong experience and in depth knowledge in environmental policy development and monitoring
  • Professional experience in UAE, GCC or Middle East is a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically and creatively, generating innovative ways to drive performance and impact.
  • Proven track record in stakeholder and policy engagement

Education

  • Higher degree in natural and/or environmental sciences or related fields.

External – Plays a critical role in stakeholder management and partnership management. Works with local governments, industry and research institutions to seek their buy in of EN-WWF conservation agenda. Works in close collaboration with colleagues in the WWF network when appropriate.
